How to Choose a Leather Belt
Width, thickness, grade, buckle and sizing — the five specifications that decide whether a belt lasts a decade.
A belt is the simplest leather good and therefore the one where shortcuts show fastest.
Width sets formality
30–32 mm for dress, 35–40 mm for casual and denim.
Thickness sets lifespan
3.2–4.0 mm full grain for dress; up to 4.8 mm for heavy casual use.
One-piece, not laminated
Two thin layers glued together will delaminate; a single cut strap will not.
Buckle and keeper
Solid brass or stainless on a Chicago screw so you can change it without replacing the belt.
