How to Measure Your Leather Belt Size Correctly

Your jeans label is not your belt size. Here is the two-minute method that is.

The two inch rule

Belt sizes are measured from the buckle fold to the centre hole, not end to end. As a starting point, add two inches to your trouser waist size.

A 34 inch trouser takes a 36 inch belt, which places the prong in the centre of five holes and leaves symmetrical adjustment either way.

The accurate method

Take a belt you already wear at the hole you use. Measure from the fold at the buckle to that hole, in inches. That number is your belt size, regardless of what your trousers say.

If you wear trousers at different rises — suit trousers high, jeans low — measure both and buy separately.

Width by occasion

1.25 inch for dress trousers and suits. 1.5 inch for jeans, chinos and casual wear. Anything wider reads as a work or western belt.
