Matching Belt and Shoes: The Rule and Its Exceptions
Same colour family, comparable finish, matched metals. Three checks and three legitimate exceptions.
This is the most quoted rule in menswear and the most misunderstood.
Family, not exact shade
Mid-brown belt with cognac shoes is correct; black belt with brown shoes is not.
Finish should agree
Suede shoes pair with matte or textured belts, not high-shine ones.
Metals matter
Silver buckle with silver watch, brass with brass.
