Choosing Leather Dress Shoes
Construction, last shape, leather type and sole — how to buy shoes you can resole for twenty years.
Shoe quality is mostly construction. The upper leather is the part you see; the welt is the part that decides lifespan.
Goodyear welt or Blake stitch
Both are resoleable. Cemented soles are not, and that ends the shoe's life at the first sole wear.
Full grain calf upper
Fine grain, takes polish, ages well. Corrected grain shines but creases harshly.
Last shape over size number
The last determines fit far more than the stated size; try the same last across models.
Rotate and tree them
Cedar trees and a rest day between wears roughly double upper life.
