What makes a shoes & boot worth keeping

A welted shoe is the only construction that can be taken apart and rebuilt. Everything else is disposable footwear with a leather upper.

Our shoes and boots are Goodyear welted: the upper, insole and welt are stitched together, and the outsole is stitched to the welt. When the sole wears through, a cobbler removes it without touching the upper.

Uppers are cut from French and American calf, lasted for 48 hours, and finished with a hand-burnished patina at the toe and heel.

Leather quality
Full grain and vegetable-tanned hides from US and French tanneries only.
Craftsmanship
Hand saddle-stitched with waxed linen, burnished edges, solid brass hardware.
Who it is for
People replacing something disposable with a piece they intend to keep.
Styles available
Oxford Shoes, Derby Shoes, Loafers, Chelsea Boots, Dress Boots, Casual Shoes, Leather Sneakers

Buying guide

How to choose leather shoes & boots

Construction decides whether a shoe is an asset or a consumable. Everything below assumes you intend to keep them for a decade.

Read the full guide
  1. 01

    Construction first

Goodyear welted can be resoled four to six times. Cemented soles cannot be rebuilt at all.

    Goodyear welt explained
  2. 02

    Choosing a last

Round lasts suit wide feet and casual trousers; chiselled lasts elongate the foot and belong with suiting.

  3. 03

    Leather type

French and American calf for dress finishes, waxed and pull-up grains for boots that live outdoors.

    Full grain vs top grain
  4. 04

    Sizing and break-in

Order your true Brannock length. Welted footwear stretches slightly across the ball and never in length.

  5. 05

    Soles and outsoles

Leather soles for dry city wear, rubber studded soles for weather. Both can be swapped at the first resole.

  6. 06

    Quality indicators

A visible welt stitch, a leather insole that shows a footbed after a month, and closed-channel stitching on dress soles.

  7. 07

    Common mistakes

Wearing the same pair two days running, drying wet shoes near heat, and delaying the first resole past the welt.

Aftercare

Care for leather shoes & boots

Leather does not need much — it needs the right thing, at the right interval. Everything we make is serviceable rather than disposable.

Read the care guide
  • Cleaning

Dry brush weekly, damp cloth monthly. Never saddle soap a waxed finish.

    Read
  • Conditioning

A pea of neatsfoot or lanolin cream every three to six months, worked warm.

    Read
  • Storage

Hang or lay flat, away from direct sun and radiators. Cotton bag, never plastic.

    Read
  • Waterproofing

Wax-based dubbin on rugged grains; leave vegetable-tanned pieces to breathe.

    Read
  • Repair

Stitching, hardware and soles are all serviceable — send it back, don't replace it.

Fit

Sizing leather shoes & boots

  1. 01

    Use a Brannock

Measure heel-to-ball length, not just heel-to-toe. Our lasts follow the ball measurement.

  2. 02

Fit at the end of the day

Feet swell up to half a size by evening. Fit then, not at breakfast.

  3. 03

    Expect three weeks

The leather insole compresses permanently to your footbed, so welted shoes get better with wear.

Style guide

How to wear it

  • Shoes with belts

Tone match first. A cognac oxford and a black belt is the most common and most visible mistake in menswear.

  • Shoes with bags

Let the bag sit a shade darker; footwear should be the lighter, more finished element.

  • Formal outfits

Black oxford, leather sole, closed lacing. Anything with visible rubber breaks black tie and business formal.

  • Business outfits

Dark brown oxford or a leather-soled loafer under mid-grey and navy suiting.

  • Travel style

One welted boot on a studded rubber sole replaces three pairs of packed shoes.
