What makes this piece different

  • Full Grain Leather

The intact top layer of the hide — the densest fibre structure available.

  • Handcrafted

Cut, stitched and finished by one maker in our Austin workshop.

  • Premium Stitching

Saddle stitch in waxed linen: cut one loop and the seam still holds.

  • Lifetime Durability

Built to be repaired, not replaced — hardware and seams are serviceable.

  • Artisan Made

Small batch runs from single hides, signed by the maker who built it.

  • Premium Hardware

Solid brass and stainless steel, set on screws rather than crushed rivets.

  • Natural Aging

Vegetable tannage means colour deepens with sunlight, oils and use.

The story

Why we made it this way

We priced this piece around the hide, not the other way around. Nothing here is thinned to hit a number.

Assembly runs across four benches in Austin: cutting, edge work, stitching, and final conditioning.

Tanned slowly with chestnut and quebracho bark over several weeks. It arrives pale and firm and darkens toward honey and whiskey with sunlight and handling.

It belongs to the leather shoes & boots family and shares its tannage with our vegetable tanned leather pieces.

Seven stages

How this piece is made

One maker follows a single piece from hide selection to the box it arrives in.

  1. Stage 01

    Leather Selection

Hides are graded by hand; only the bend and shoulder make it to the cutting table.

  2. Stage 02

    Pattern Cutting

Patterns are struck with a clicker die or hand knife, always with the grain direction.

  3. Stage 03

    Hand Stitching

Two needles, one waxed linen thread, seven stitches per inch through pricked holes.

  4. Stage 04

    Edge Finishing

Edges are bevelled, sanded through four grits, then burnished with beeswax and canvas.

  5. Stage 05

    Hardware Installation

Solid brass fittings set with Chicago screws so they can be replaced, never scrapped.

  6. Stage 06

    Quality Inspection

Every piece is measured, flexed and signed off against a fourteen-point checklist.

  7. Stage 07

    Packaging

Wrapped in tissue, bagged in cotton and boxed with its care card and maker's mark.

Leather education

Understanding vegetable tanned leather

Tanned with bark tannins over weeks rather than hours. Firm, honest, and it darkens beautifully with sunlight.

Close-up of Vegetable Tanned Leather grain

What is full grain leather?

The intact outer layer of the hide with the grain untouched — no sanding, no embossing.

Read the guide

Why it lasts longer

The tightest fibre bundles sit closest to the surface; leaving them intact keeps the tensile strength.

Read the guide

How leather ages

Oils, sunlight and handling darken the surface unevenly — the record of how you use it.

Patina explained

A gloss that builds where hands touch most. Corrected grains cannot form it; full grain always does.

Buying advice

Choosing well the first time

Construction decides whether a shoe is an asset or a consumable. Everything below assumes you intend to keep them for a decade.

How to choose the right size

Compare the listed dimensions against what you carry daily — laptop, folio, passport — rather than against a size label.

Who this piece is for

Buyers replacing a disposable piece for the last time: people who would rather condition leather twice a year than reorder every eighteen months.

Best use cases

Five-day office wear, weekly travel and weekend use. The finish is chosen so scuffs read as character instead of damage.

Matching accessories

Keep hardware tones consistent across belt, watch and bag; match leather tone within one shade of your shoes.

Gift recommendations

Unsized pieces — wallets, card holders, key holders — are the safest gifts. Add blind deboss initials for a personal finish that never dates.

What to wear it with

Leather care

Keeping it alive for a decade

Five habits separate leather that ages beautifully from leather that simply wears out.

Dry brush weekly, damp cloth monthly. Never saddle soap a waxed finish.

Learn more

Conditioning

A pea of neatsfoot or lanolin cream every three to six months, worked warm.

Learn more

Storage

Hang or lay flat, away from direct sun and radiators. Cotton bag, never plastic.

Learn more

Waterproofing

Wax-based dubbin on rugged grains; leave vegetable-tanned pieces to breathe.

Repair

Stitching, hardware and soles are all serviceable — send it back, don't replace it.
