What makes a wallet worth keeping

Wallets live in a back pocket under body heat and pressure for a decade. That is a materials problem before it is a design problem.

We build wallets from thin-split full grain and vegetable-tanned calf — leathers chosen for how they behave when compressed daily rather than how they photograph on day one.

Every seam is saddle-stitched with waxed linen thread. Unlike machine lock-stitch, a saddle stitch cannot unravel: cut one loop and the rest hold. It takes about forty minutes per wallet, which is precisely why most brands don't do it.

Full grain and vegetable-tanned hides from US and French tanneries only.
Craftsmanship

Who it is for

Buying guide

How to choose leather wallets

A wallet fails at the stitch line, not the leather. Decide capacity first, then thickness, then thread — in that order.

Read the full guide
  1. 01

    Choosing a format

Bifold for cash and eight-plus cards, card holder for four, travel wallet when a passport and boarding passes join the rotation.

  2. 02

    Thickness and carry

Under 1 mm per panel keeps a bifold below 10 mm loaded. Anything thicker curves in a back pocket and stays curved.

  3. 03

    Leather type

Full grain calf for structure that holds shape, vegetable tanned for the fastest and deepest patina.

    Full grain vs top grain
  4. 04

    Stitching quality

Waxed linen saddle stitch cannot unravel from a single cut loop. Machine lock-stitch can, and usually does at the fold.

    How to choose a wallet
  5. 05

    Edges and lining

Burnished raw edges age; painted edges chip. Cotton lining wears with the shell, nylon shreds while the leather is still sound.

  6. 06

    Quality indicators

Card slots cut with relief, an unlined interior on slim models, and a flesh side that is smooth rather than fibrous.

  7. 07

    Common mistakes

Carrying coins in a bifold, over-stuffing a card holder past six cards, and conditioning a wallet that lives against skin oils already.

Aftercare

Care for leather wallets

Leather does not need much — it needs the right thing, at the right interval. Everything we make is serviceable rather than disposable.

Read the care guide
  • Cleaning

Dry brush weekly, damp cloth monthly. Never saddle soap a waxed finish.

    Read
  • Conditioning

A pea of neatsfoot or lanolin cream every three to six months, worked warm.

    Read
  • Storage

Hang or lay flat, away from direct sun and radiators. Cotton bag, never plastic.

    Read
  • Waterproofing

Wax-based dubbin on rugged grains; leave vegetable-tanned pieces to breathe.

  • Repair

Stitching, hardware and soles are all serviceable — send it back, don't replace it.

Sizing leather wallets

  1. 01

    Count your cards

Four or fewer: card holder. Five to ten: bifold. More than ten: you want a zip travel wallet.

  2. 02

    Measure your pocket

Front-pocket carry favours a vertical holder; back pocket needs a horizontal bifold to spread pressure.

  3. 03

    Allow for break-in

Slots loosen roughly half a card's width in the first month. A tight new wallet is a correctly sized one.

Style guide

How to wear it

  • Wallets with belts

Same tannage, same tone. A cognac veg-tan wallet and belt will age into the same colour together.

  • Wallets with bags

Pick a wallet a shade darker than your briefcase so it reads deliberate rather than mismatched.

  • Formal outfits

Card holder in the inside jacket pocket. Nothing in the trouser pocket ruins a clean line faster than a loaded bifold.

  • Business outfits

A slim bifold with a business card slot handles both payment and introductions.

  • Travel style

Zip travel wallet for documents, card holder for daily spend — split the risk across two pockets.
