Choosing a Leather Bag for Work and Travel
Briefcase, messenger, backpack or duffel — the right answer depends on load, distance and how often you set the bag down.

Start with the laptop sleeve
The single most important specification in a work bag is whether the laptop sleeve is suspended above the base. A sleeve that reaches the base transmits every drop straight into the machine.
Second is padding thickness — 8 mm of closed-cell foam is the practical minimum for a modern thin laptop.
Matching format to commute
Briefcase: short commutes, structured presentation, load under 12 pounds. Messenger: cycling and transit, one-handed access, softer drape. Backpack: distances over a mile or loads over 15 pounds — two shoulders, always. Duffel: two to four nights of travel.
Hardware and failure points
Check that strap anchors are riveted through doubled leather, not stitched to a single panel. Check that the zip is a YKK Excella or equivalent. Check that base corners have a second layer.
These three details predict which bags are still in service at year ten.
Weight is a real cost
A full grain briefcase weighs four to five pounds empty. If you carry it a mile each way daily, that is a genuine consideration — an unstructured messenger in 1.6 mm leather saves over a pound.
