Leather Stitching: Saddle Stitch Versus Machine Lockstitch
Two threads or one? The difference determines whether a broken stitch unravels a seam or stays put.
Stitching is the most common failure point in leather goods, and the easiest to inspect before buying.
Saddle stitch
Two needles, one thread, each hole locked twice by hand. If one stitch breaks the seam holds.
Lockstitch
Machine sewing with a bobbin thread. Fast, neat and strong, but a broken stitch can unzip a run.
Density and thread
7–10 SPI with waxed polyester or linen thread is the durable range for goods.

Buying advice
Look for even spacing and stitches that sit in a recessed groove; proud stitches abrade first.
