How to Prevent Leather From Cracking
Cracking is dehydration plus flex. Keep the fats topped up and the storage stable and it never starts.
Once the grain cracks, the fibre network is broken. Prevention is the only real treatment.
Heat is the main culprit
Car dashboards, radiators and hair dryers drive out fat liquor in hours.
Flex points fail first
Wallet spines, belt keeper folds and shoe vamps need conditioning more often than flat panels.
Rotate your goods
Alternating between two belts or two pairs of shoes lets leather recover between wears.
