Chrome Tanned Leather: Soft, Stable and Everywhere
Chrome tannage uses chromium salts to produce supple, colour-fast, water-tolerant leather in a day — the material behind most soft bags and shoe uppers.
Roughly four fifths of the world's leather is chrome tanned. It is fast, consistent and takes bright dyes that vegetable tannage cannot.
Speed and softness
Chromium salts complete tannage in about a day and leave the fibre network relaxed, giving the drape that soft bags and garments need.
Colour stability
Chrome-tanned leather resists fading and water-spotting far better than raw veg-tan, so it stays close to the colour you bought.
Modern tanneries are closed-loop
Responsible tanneries recycle chrome liquor and treat effluent. Ask for LWG (Leather Working Group) audit ratings rather than assuming.
